LUKE'S COMMENTS:

NICE TO HEAR SOME GOOD NEWS ONCE FOR A CHANGE. I WAS VISITIING WITH A YOUNG MAN THE OTHER DAY, THAT HAD JUST MOVED BACK HOME FROM COLLEGE. HIS PLANS WERE TO HELP OUT AROUND THE FAMILY FARM AND IN TIME HOPEFULLY BUILD A CATTLE YARD AT HIS NEW ACERAGE HE HAD JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED.  WE CHATTED FOR A LENGTH OF TIME, HE ALSO TOLD ME HOW HIS NEIGHBOR ALLOWED HIM TO BUY SOME  EXTRA ACRES TO SQUARE UP HIS ACERAGE AND TO HAVE SOME TILLABLE ACRES AROUND HIS PROPERTY. THUS ALLOWING HIM TO HAVE SOME GRASS FOR GRAZING OR FEED FOR CATTLE IN THE FUTURE.

ITS GREAT TO SEE A YOUNG MAN WANTING TO BE A FARMER/CATTLE FEEDER IN SUCH DIFFICULT TIMES FOR THAT PARTICULAR OCCUPATION RIGHT NOW. AS MANY ELDERS  WILL TELL YOU, WONDER IF U CAN EVER MAKE ANY MONEY, INSTEAD OF JUST GOING BACKWARDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN SO MUCH IS HEADED TOWARDS THE CORPORATE WAY. ALSO GREAT TO SEE A OLDER FARMER HELPING A YOUNG FARMER GET STARTER IN THE BUSINESS. WHEN I WAS IN HIGHSCHOOL MY DAD SHARECROPPED WITH 3 DIFFERENT OLDER NEIGHBORS, NOT BECAUSE THEY NEEDED TO, BUT BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO HELP A YOUNG FARMER GET HIS FOOT IN THE DOOR. IT SEEMS LIKE NOW A DAYS WHEN A FARMER RETIRES HE SELLS EVERYTHING AT AUCTION AND WILL EVEN AUCTION OFF THE CASH RENT OF HIS FARMGROUND, OFTEN FORGETTING OF THE DAYS WHEN SOMEONE HELPED THEM TO GET WERE THEY ARE TODAY. I GUESS WHAT IM SAYING IS THAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO DO WHAT THEY CAN TO HELP OUT THE FUTURE FARMERS AND CATTLE FEEDERS OF OUR AREA TO KEEP FAMILY FARMS AND FARM BOYS AND GIRLS ALIVE. THOSE OF YOU WHO GREW UP ON THE FARM KNOW THERE IS NO BETTER WAY OF LIFE.
